Field data requests
The tracks and waypoints on this site are not offered for download. Researchers, historical societies, park staff and fellow explorers can ask for the GPS files for specific trails, and each request is reviewed by hand.
How it works
- Read the terms below and tick the box to agree.
- Fill in the request form. Say which trails or areas you would like and how you plan to use them. The Trail Index lists every named trail and its area.
- Each request is reviewed. Not every request can be granted, and some sites, such as cellar holes, cemeteries and artifact sites, are shared only with the National Park Service and historical societies.
- Approved files are shared with your email address through Google Drive, for that request only.
Field data use terms
These GPS files come from years of field work by Les Heilakka and the Old Paths Crew. They are shared one person at a time, for personal use and research, so that old paths and the sites along them stay protected. By accepting them, you agree to these terms.
Please don’t share or publish these files or their locations
Don’t upload or post the tracks, waypoints or coordinates to:
- public or shared maps, including topo maps and online map layers
- Gaia GPS or CalTopo public maps, shared folders or public links
- Strava, AllTrails, OnX or similar route-sharing apps
- Google Maps or Google Earth shared maps
- Facebook, Instagram or any other social media, including screenshots that show locations
- websites, blogs, forums or published articles
You may load them into your own GPS device or app for personal use, as long as they stay private.
Don’t pass the files on
Please don’t forward, copy or give the files to anyone else. If someone else would like them, ask them to request them directly.
Leave every site as you find it
Don’t dig, collect artifacts, move stones or disturb cellar holes, wells, walls, cemeteries or survey marks. Many of these sites are on Acadia National Park land, where removing or disturbing historic material is prohibited, and others are on private property. Respect private land and closures. See Walk lightly.
